The Kesen River has long been a clean river where salmon comes up, sweetfish, yamame and iwana swim, and is a nationally well-known Mecca for mountain-stream fishermen. In July lots of people come here and compete with each other fishing.

I've fished in the Kesen River with my friends since I was a boy. The fishing season officially starts on July 1st, when I take a day off and go fishing before dawn. You can catch a lot of fish, although they are still small. That evening I usually enjoy the first taste of sweetfish of the year with my family and relatives. We drink sake and say, "let's broil and eat sweetfish". It's really fun.
Beginners, too, can catch sweetfish. There are two ways of fishing using baits and traps, which are available at the fishing shops along the river. You pay the charges for fishing in those shops. You need to bring long rubber boots and a fishing rod. Weekdays are better, if possible, since the river is crowded at the weekends.
In March the yamame fishing season starts and many people come to the river for fishing. The Kesen River is very popular lately. In September we can fish for big ones called "super yamame". It's not easy to catch one, but both beginners and experienced fishermen have an equal chance. Both fishing and the Kesen River offer a lot to learn and experience. That's why they are attractive.
